Remodeling Your Bathroom Within the Budget

A bathroom remodeling project is one of the easiest ways a homeowner can give their living spaces a personal touch. But remodeling a bathroom does not have to be a costly or time-consuming chore. By using simple painting techniques and inexpensive yet stylish accessories, a bathroom remodeling project can be done within a simple budget while still creating a useful and elegant space.

Mirrors are often unframed and simple. To add a bit of elegance and create a stylish point of interest in your bathroom, consider different types of framing options to define a plain mirror. Using inexpensive fluted molding found at most home stores, measure and cut lengths to fit each edge of the mirror. Apply decorative corner blocks to each corner of the mirror using adhesive caulk and allow it to dry for 1 hour. Apply each length of molding to the edges of the mirrors by using adhesive caulk and allow it to dry for 1 hour. If a colored frame is preferred, paint or stain the molding prior to its application.

Paint can also be used to create an interesting frame to a simple mirror. Choose a choice of shape such as an oval or rectangle. Using a heavy poster board cut a shape large enough to cover the center of your mirror leaving an edge of at least 3 inches, on each side for painting. Tape the template to the center of the mirror and paint the exposed edges in a preferred color or pattern. Painting techniques such as sponging or textured paints may be used to add interest. Allow to dry overnight and apply a clear sealant for durability before removing the template.

A budget friendly alternative to expensive new bathroom fixtures is to purchase them second-hand. Thrift stores and plumbing outlets often have them on sale or closeout for a drastically reduced price. If this is not within your bathroom remodeling budget, you can consider painting the fixtures. While painting these items will not last forever, it can provide a new look that will last and be durable enough to be able to afford new ones at a later time. Remove the fixtures prior to painting and sand thoroughly using a medium grit sand paper. Thoroughly wipe away all sanding dust and any residue left after cleaning.

Using a spray-on automotive primer found at most automotive stores, apply light coats of primer allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Depending upon the condition of the fixtures, three coats should make for a smooth finish. Choose a preferred color of automotive paint and apply light coats allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Use several coats of a spray-on sealant to add extra durability. This method can also be used to refinish towel bars, soap dishes and other bathroom accessories. Make sure to observe proper ventilation when using any paint products.

A fresh coat of paint applied to each wall makes for a bright and attractive change in any bathroom space. Using poster board to design your own stencils, apply a pattern of your choosing to each painted wall to add a touch of personal style and interest to your bathroom.

Simple and inexpensive changes can also make for a budget-friendly and easy bathroom remodeling project. Placing scatter rugs, new towels and artwork to bare spots will define a plain area and create some attractive interest. Use a simple length of decorative fabric for a shower curtain. Adding inexpensive trim to the top and bottom edges and hanging it along the shower rod using café hooks will create an alternative look to the standard shower curtain ensemble. Using a plain, plastic shower liner behind the fabric curtain will provide a water-proof barrier.

Remodeling a bathroom can be a fun and rewarding project that adds personal style and a finished look to the home while remaining budget-friendly.
